Beverly Hills Library Architecture & Timeline

  • 1929: Beverly Hills City Council approves the creation of the Municipal Public Library.
  • 1932: The growing library surpassed 10,000 volumes and over 5,000 registered borrowers, so it was relocated to a larger space in the North Wing of the Beverly Hills City Hall.
  • 1945: By 1945 the library expanded again to take up two floors of City Hall.
  • 1965: After funds were raised by Friends of the Beverly Hills Public Library for new construction, a new library building opened again. It was designed by Las Vegas architect Martin Stern in collaboration with developer Del Webb who built the famous Flamingo Hotel. It was done in a midcentury style with colorful mosaic tile around the exterior.
  • 1990: After continuing to increase the number of volumes and membership, a new building was chosen across from City Hall and opened September 11, 1990, this time in the classically Californian blend of Spanish revival and Art Deco.
  • 2013: The children’s section of the library was redesigned by architect Johnson Favaro to be a brighter, friendlier, and more organized space, with crisp white walls and floors, pops of color in fun furniture, and a storytime theater. Johnson Favaro’s other projects include the Manhattan Beach Library, the UCLA Hendrick Study, Lions Park, and more.
  • 2019: The Beverly Hills Public Library has more plans for more renovation in the coming years to keep up with changing technologies and public needs.
